We are Your American Cancer Society

Together, we can save lives and create a world with
less cancer and more birthdays!

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by eliminating cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.  More than 3 million volunteers across the country join us in our efforts.

  • Research:  The American Cancer Society is the largest non-profit, non-governmental funder of cancer research in the United States, having spent approximately $3.5 billion on cancer research since 1946.  We fund young investigators, epidemiology and behavior research, and professional training.  We have supported 44 investigators who went on to win the Nobel Prize, which is considered the highest accolade any scientist can receive.
  • Education:  We teach people how to prevent and reduce their risk of certain cancers, when to get early detection tests, which treatment options exist, and how to care for cancer patients.  We hold classes, seminars, and forums; conduct outreach to health care professionals who need to know the latest information about our cancer prevention/early detection screening guidelines and cancer treatment; and develop youth and adult-targeted programs that address the advantages of healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Advocacy:  Legislative advocacy plays a pivotal role in helping the Society reach our 2015 goals to reduce cancer incidence and mortality and improve quality of life for cancer patients and their families.  Our work at the federal, state, and local levels has enabled more people to get cancer screening and treatment, regardless of their ability to pay.  We advocate for cancer patients’ rights, protection, access to care, and quality of life.
  • Service:  We provide free around-the-clock information and support by phone (800-227-2345) or the Internet (cancer.org), every day and night of the year.  We also provide a wide range of services for cancer patients and their families.
